Treatment of teleangiectasias on the legs via laser
Small teleangiectasias (small blood vessels that form a net in the skin and represent micro-varicose veins with a diameter of 0,1 to 1 mm) may also be treated by laser-therapy. Although these small bright red capillaries or slightly thicker dark blue teleangiectasias may only pose a cosmetic problem, they also may be part of a disease complex that results from disturbed venous blood flow of deeper blood vessels (varicose veins). Therefore we suggest the following approach:
- Thorough phlebologic exam in our phlebologic clinic.
- In case of pathology of the superficial or deeper bigger veins, these should be trteated either by surgery or sclerotherapy.
- The remaining superficial teleangiectasias may then also be subjected to sclerotherapy or in case of thicker blood vessels surgically removed by the 'so-called' crochet-technique, as we have found that all currently available lasers will not lead to satisfactory treatment results and often lead to pigment changes or scarring that may be permanent.
- In about 5 % of the cases, very fine red teleangiectasias remain. These can be treated with the pulsed dye-laser.
In summary, teleangiectasias on the legs cannot be treated successfully with laser treatment
alone, but require combination-therapy (see above).
